CYSA Referee Programs

Carver maintains two Referee programs, one for USSF Certified referees age 14 and up who officiate travel games, and one Genesis referees ages 11-13 who officiate Tykes games while learning about the duties and responsibilities of a referee.

How to Become a Certified USSF Referee

Travel Soccer Referees must hold a certification from the U.S. Soccer Federation. This certification provided the training necessary to safely adjudicate games and ensure that all participants have a positive experience. In Massachusetts trainig courses are provided by the Massachusetts Star Referee Committee. The certification process consists of 8 steps and takes approximately 6 hours.

Step 1: Register for an account with MSRC

Step 2: Enroll in the New Referee Orientation Course

Step 3: Create a U.S. Soccer Learning Center account

Step 4: Complete the U.S. Soccer Supplemental Courses

  • Introduction to Safe and Healthy Playing Environments (All referees)
  • Safesport (18+)
  • National Background Check (18+)

Step 5: Complete Pre-Course Online Study Modules

Step 6: Attend the New Referee Orientation Course*

Step 7: Attend a New Referee Field Session*

Step 8: Complete the Post-Course Test

*MSRC offers a Hybrid Course that Covers both the New Referee Orientation and Field Session. CYSA highly recommends these opportunities.

CYSA Genesis Referee Program

The CYSA Genesis Referee Program program serves as a developmental opportunity for aspiring referees that are not yet old enough to become certified officials. Targeted at 11-13 year olds, this program helps to develop the skills and confidence necessary to act as a U.S. Soccer certified Referee.

Participation in the Genesis Referee Program Offers:

  • The opportunity to learn the rules of the game in a low pressure environment
  • The opportunity to become familiar with the mechanics of working as part of a referee team
  • The opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them before working in competitive matches
  • The opportunity, upon successful evaluation, to become a U.S. Soccer certified referee at 13

Referee Gear and Equipment
U.S. Soccer Referees are required to provide their own gear and equipment. Official Sports International and Capelli are two suppliers where things like uniforms, outerwear, and other supplies can be pruchased.
